While we step into the sportswear stores, like UNDER ARMOUR, NIKE or LINING, a variety of elastic clothing is introduced. It helps us shape our body and makes us comfortable. Every new elastic fabric comes from an innovative elastic yarn. During that time, a sentence was called from my memory, "from fiber to fashion" and I start to feel proud as a researcher of the cutting-edge technology of fashion yarn.
Today we will discuss how many kinds of elastic yarns are there in the recent market.
1. Core spun yarn
The core spun yarn is created by spinning staple fibers around a core yarn. The core yarn can be either high tenacity polyester filament for extra strength or metal for conductivity. While elastic fiber, such as spandex, PTT, PBT, etc. is used as the core, the yarn becomes stretchable. Spandex cotton core spun yarn is popular and widely used.
Sample: Spandex cotton core spun yarn: 30D spandex + 60Nm cotton
Advantage: Stretchable, soft and comfortable
Core spun yarn is produced on traditional ring spinning machine by adding a spandex unwinding device. Compact spinning allows us get a true yarn which in many physical yarn parameters (hairiness, tenacity, elongation...) is vastly superior conventional ring yarn.

2. Draw and textured yarn
It is obtained from texturing process of polyester or nylon POY.
Sample: Polyester dty 70D
3. Single covered or double covered yarn
Typically, spandex is used as the core yarn and the DTY filament yarn or spun yarn is wound on the core yarn in a spring form in S/Z direction. This yarn is produced by a traditional covering machine. This yarn is widely used in tapes, socks, seamless and underwear.
Sample: 70D spandex +70D polyester DTY
4. Air covering/air imtermingled yarn
It is produced by combining one or several DTY yarns together with an elastic fiber like spandex. Both ends of yarn run through an intermingling jet, where air pressure will be applied to create interlacing zones.
Advantage: Lower production cost
Sample: 150D dty polyester + 40D spandex
5. Twisted yarn
First, assemble the pre-drawn elastic fiber with one or several ends DTY filament yarn, and then feed it on TFO twister. The production cost is lower than core spun yarn and the number of knots is less. The TFO twisting machine can be wound directly into cones for final use.
6. Hollow core spun yarn
It is similar to core spun yarn, but use water-soluble filament PVA as the core yarn. Finally, the PVA is dissolved after completion, and the hollow core spun yarn is obtained. The hollow core spun yarn is very light, fluffy, easy to absorb water and quick drying.
